Bad wins? Good losses? Every game counts 2/20 KP Elo update

The weirdest bias I see when I look at bubble lists is the focus on “Good wins” and “Bad losses”. It’s almost as if people are expecting the committee to be using some kind of version of Joe Lunardi’s Winning Points:

http://insider.espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10337957/bracketology-why-kansas-jayhawks-deserve-no-1-seed

Winning Points gave you points (or took them away) depending of quality of opposition,  location, and result. So far so good? No, not really, but I’ll get to that in a second. Jacob W. Schaller gave Lunardi an absolute Fisking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisking) here:

http://www.vegaswatch.org/2014/01/winning-points.html

I’ll note that Lunardi has never referred to Winning Points again. The fundamental problem with this methodology (as well as the RPI itself) is that it gives the wrong level of reward for a tough win (or an easy one), and for a tough loss. First of all, any system that only looks at binary results (wins or losses) should NEVER reward a loss or punish a win. This should be obvious, but I’ll make it even clearer shortly. The RPI is 75% a measure of strength of schedule (the other 25% being your win%). Teams can often improve their RPI simply by facing highly rated opposition, regardless of result. Similarly, teams can see their RPI drop by facing poorly rated opposition. Please note, I’m not just talking about the ranking itself, but the underlying rating as well. Please note, this would be the case even if RPI switched the weights to increase your win% to 50% of the rating. If you’re curious what the RPI ratings would look like if that were the case (keeping the ratio between opponents win% and opponents’ opponents win% constant), here you go: https://sethburn.wordpress.com/2015/02/20/if-the-rpi-was-only-50-based-on-strength-of-schedule/

Arpad Elo solved this problem years ago for chess: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system

The simple answer is that each win should be rewarded by how hard it was to achieve. Elo has a basic prediction for the likelihood of victory for each participant. The methodology is sound and can be applied to basketball a few different way. The first is the traditional way (teams gain or lose points by virtue of their ratings and results relative to their competition), or by comparing results relative to a constant. Let’s look at Gonzaga’s game Saturday night at Saint Mary’s:

Gonzaga’s Pythag rating is .9483. Saint Mary’s rating is .7659. Using the formula (A-A*B)/(A+B-2*A*B) we get an expected win% for Gonzaga of 85%. However, you’ll note that the game is at Saint Mary’s. Gonzaga’s road Pythag rating is .9293, while Saint Mary’s home Pythag is .8180. That gives us an expected win% for Gonzaga of 75%, which is what is listed on the site. Location matters.

Instead of looking at Gonzaga, we could use a constant, such as a Pythag of .9500 (if we want to estimate how often a monster team would expect to win at Saint Mary’s), or a Pythag of .7700 (which is around where the bubble sits). Let’s look at the monster first.

A team with a Pythag of .9500 would have a road Pythag of .9323. As with Gonzaga, they’d expect to win 75% of the time (74.5% in Gonzaga’s case, 75.4% in the case of our generic monster). That gives them .754 expected wins. Thus, if a team were to beat Saint Mary’s on the road, they’d gain .246 wins-above-monster. Alternately, if they were to lose, they’d lose .754 wins. There is a reason that only five teams have a positive WAM.

A bubble team with a Pythag of .7700 would have a road Pythag of .7081. That means they’d expect to win at Saint Mary’s 35.0% of the time. Thus, a win there would be worth .65, and loss would cost .35.

Are you starting to see my problem with bonus points? A good win should be rewarding, but only in regards to exactly how difficult it was to achieve. Let’s take the ultimate example: A bubble team at Kentucky.

A bubble team would expect to win 1 out of every 28.6 games at Kentucky, or 3.38% of the time. Thus, their reward for winning should be .966, and their penalty for losing should be .034. That’s it. No bonus points.

It’s even more pronounced at the other end. Let’s say our generic bubble team heads to Cal St. Bakersfield to take on the Roadrunners (beep, beep). How often would we expect them to win? About 88.4% of the time. That means that 11.6% of the time we’d expect them to pick up a bad loss.

The important test is that two identical teams facing completely different schedules should have the same expected value in whatever metric we want to use. If we want to figure out who is worthy of a #1 seed, we could use wins-above-monster. If we want to see who is worthy of an at-large bid, we could use wins-above-bubble. In either case, we could use implied Elo. What we shouldn’t due is used a biased metric that rewards teams for losing to high quality opposition.

Mark Titus talked about his work with the Mock Selection Committee:

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/ncaa-basketball-power-rankings-march-madness-tournament-selection-sunday-kentucky-wildcats-wisconsin-badgers-duke-blue-devils-villanova-wildcats-virginia-cavaliers-gonzaga-bulldogs-dick-vitale-arizona/

Scroll down to Duke. Titus said his biggest regret was not questioning Duke’s place on the #1 line. Now, they are given simulated season results, including conference tournaments, so it is possible that under their scenario Duke won out, and some of their competitors for a #1 seed picked up some losses. However, Duke’s section included this money quote from a committee member:

“I care more about who you can beat than who can beat you.”

OK… that’s… fortunate for teams who play in power conferences and have chances to knock off high quality opposition, particularly at home. Now, Duke really does have some fantastic wins, but WAM counts the losses too. It sounds like this committee member is using his own personalized version of Winning Points.

Still, I’m less concerned who gets a #1 seed instead of a #2 seed, and more concerned with whom is deemed worthy of an at-large bid. Right now a team like Davidson is showing up in the “Next Four Out” while Illinois is solidly in:

http://www.syracuse.com/patrick-stevens/index.ssf/2015/02/bracketology_purdue_rises_afte.html#incart_river

http://bloguin.com/thestudentsection/basketball/bubble-breakdown-february-20-conference-tournaments-are-approaching.html

The thing is, Davidson is about .77 wins ahead Illinois, relative to their schedules (for our purposes Davidson is 17-6, with the win vs. Catholic not being counted). Davidson has a better resume than Illinois at the moment, for all the good it is doing them.

I’ll talk about these disconnects more as we get closer to tournament time. For now, here are the current Elo’s and Wins-Above-X:
